idea- lonliness and isolation
staircase idea
Painting
Amazing connection between spaces and stairs. My idea of design is trying to incorporate such idea into the connection of spaces.
And this idea is derived from the painting of Edward hopper, as the woman, who is inside the painting, shows that she is quite confuse of her future. And the Maze-like stairs connection can visualize the confusions of the woman.
Furthermore, there will be openings which leads the light into the structure and shows the direction . And this can visualize the optimism of the woman and her willingness of finding her role of life.
And the light shows the way out, and help the woman grab her future.

Light- serching direction from the maze

Light- showing and leading the direction
There is an important role for the light when we are inside the maze. In my design, i am trying to focus on the "role of light".
This picture gives a sense of reaching the final destination. In my design, i am trying to re-visualize the scene from this picture at the exit.
The open should cooperate with light and showing the real direction inside the maze.
This picture shows the light coming from the dark (the theme of my design)

Week5 -Project 2 : Room and Narrative
Chosen Painting: Edward Hopper- “Morning Sun” ( 1952)
The middle-aged woman is sitting alone on her bed and staring at the window. This gives a sense of isolation and solitary. However, with the bright light coming from the window and shining on the woman’s face, the sense of optimistic can be shown from the ambience of the painting.
My interpretation of the woman’s facial expression is that she is questioning about her role in life and she is quite confusing with her future. Moreover, we can feel some sense of optimism, as the woman seemed to have a will of going out the building and figuring out her future and personal goal.
“In Morning Sun, he depicts a lone, middle-aged woman sitting on a bed in a curiously barren room and staring at nothing in particular. By presenting situations that appear unresolved and instilling in them a pervasive sense of solitude, the artist transforms the mundane and familiar into the extraordinary and enigmatic. One of the artist’s colleagues described Hopper’s art as “silent poetry”.”
Description of the figure:
-sits in profile, in a pink slip, on a bed, staring out a window as light hits her pinched cheeks and raw-red hands.
-an ordinary room with a large opening on the wall
-light falls on the wall with an elongated shape
-small room with the sense of trapping and oppression
Narrative: A maze for a solitary middle-aged woman who is optimistically willing to figure out her role of life.

PROJECT 1- ARTIFICE: Proche and parti drawing
Proche:
Program:Program: In this parti diagram, in paying respect to the numerous usage of this Villa, from house, to office and now cafe, I chose to explore the difference in the program from dividing them into 3 parts: matrix, corridor and courtyard.
Matrix: I am trying to focus on the interconnection and the relations between the rooms. How one room is connecting to the other and how can we circulate from one room to the other.
Corridor: in the villa, we can interpret the corridor in to 2 main ways which can connect to the whole body of the building. These 2 main corridors serve as a tunnel, because as one travels through these 'tunnels', the destinations at the end [i.e. courtyards] appear much bigger in the person's perception. And this gives the sense of openness and freedom.
Geometry:Geometry: originally, I had changed this drawing from a detailed and complicated pattern to a simple one which can show the relationships of different parts of the villa. Generally, we can divide the geometry into 2 aspects: an axial and horizontal one. From the diagram we can know that the house was constructed with even spaces for the courtyard, shelter and the room. We can see some kind of rhythm there. Also, the villa was constructed symmetrically with a balance from the main middle corridor.
Structure:Structure: This parti diagram indicates the structural system of the villa. It is a composition of load bearing walls and columns, as well as some shear walls. furthermore, different thickness indicate different types of walls.
Enclosure:Enclosure: in this parti, I tried to indicate the open and closed area. And the level of enclosure is shown by the thickness of the walls.
Massing: This diagram shows the mass distribution over the site, where the mass is shown by the density of lines. The higher the line density, the greater of mass that area takes.
Circulation:
Circulation: The circulation is quite 'symmetrical' and serves as a spiritual pathway. The other small pathways are also identified for Bawa to walk into the living areas without having to pass through the centre of the buildings. Secondary pathways into rooms were drafted into this diagram. Apart from that, I am also trying to show another idea of circulation. There are some curve lines with random pattern to show that apart from walking directly in the rooms and corridors, we can always explore different routes inside the villa which we can look around in the courtyard and take some rest.
